What is a tithi?

A tithi is a lunar day, the time it takes the Moon to gain 12° on the Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning). Each tithi ends at an exact clock time, so a single day can sometimes carry two tithis.

Why does the tithi change with the city?

The tithi is read at sunrise, and sunrise differs by city. So which tithi is 'running' on a given day depends slightly on your location. Choose your city and the times update to match it.

Frequently asked questions

The vaara is one of the seven weekdays, like Budhavara (Wednesday). A tithi is a lunar day, formed by the gap between the Moon and Sun, and a lunar month has 30 of them. In the Panchang they are two separate limbs.

Each tithi ends at an exact clock time, not at midnight. So a single day can carry the end of one tithi and the start of the next.

Amavasya is the last tithi of Krishna Paksha, the new moon. Purnima is the last tithi of Shukla Paksha, the full moon. Every other day is a tithi in between.

All values use the Vedic sidereal (Lahiri) system, and the tithi is taken at sunrise. So the exact time can differ slightly with each city's sunrise.
