What is Amavasya?
Amavasya is the last tithi of Krishna Paksha, the new moon, when the Moon and Sun share the same direction (0°). There is one Amavasya each lunar month.
Why is Amavasya the same day almost everywhere?
Amavasya is an astronomical moment that occurs at one instant, so the date is the same across most of India. Only the tithi start/end and moonrise vary a little with a city's sunrise and geography.
