What is Shani Sade Sati?

Sade Sati is the roughly seven-and-a-half-year period of Shani (Saturn) when Saturn transits the sign just before your Moon sign (the 12th), your Moon sign itself (the 1st), and the sign right after it (the 2nd). Because Saturn stays about two and a half years in each sign, this journey through three signs adds up to about seven and a half years. It is based on your Moon sign (Janma rashi), not your Sun sign.

The three phases of Sade Sati

First phase (rising / Aarohini): Saturn is in the 12th from your Moon. It mostly affects the mind, such as expenses, worry, disturbed sleep and distance from home. Second phase (peak / Janma Shani): Saturn transits over your Moon sign. This is usually the most intense phase, when health, responsibility and the emotions feel the most pressure. Third phase (setting / Avarohini): Saturn moves into the 2nd, affecting money, family and speech, and relief gradually begins.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. Saturn is the planet of discipline, hard work and maturity, not merely misfortune. How Sade Sati plays out depends on how strong Saturn is in your chart, which houses it rules, and the dasha that is running. For many people this period brings responsibility, stability and the rewards of effort. So it is better met with preparation and patience than with fear.

What is Dhaiya (small panoti)?

Dhaiya, also called small panoti, are the two-and-a-half-year periods when Saturn transits the 4th (Kantaka Shani) or 8th (Ashtama Shani) from your Moon. These are separate from Sade Sati but are also considered challenging, especially Ashtama Shani, which relates to health and change.

How is Sade Sati calculated?

First your Moon sign is derived from your birth details using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Then Saturn's current sign is checked. If Saturn is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from your Moon, Sade Sati is running. Each phase starts and ends as Saturn moves from one sign into the next. Saturn completes a full round in about 30 years, so Sade Sati usually comes 2 to 3 times in a lifetime.
