What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the main timing system of Vedic astrology. It divides life into a 120-year cycle in which the nine planets each rule a Mahadasha in turn, in a fixed order and with fixed lengths. Which planet comes first is set by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth.
Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha
A Mahadasha is a major planetary period (for example Jupiter for 16 years). Each Mahadasha splits into nine Antardashas ruled by the nine planets in the same order, and each Antardasha splits further into Pratyantardashas. The running combination fine-tunes how a period feels.
How long is each planet's dasha?
The nine Mahadasha lengths are fixed: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years, adding up to 120. The order never changes; only the starting planet shifts with your nakshatra, and the first Mahadasha is usually partial (its balance).
