What is Kundli Milan (Guna Milan)?

Kundli Milan is Vedic astrology's marriage-compatibility system. It scores two people out of 36 based on their Moon (Chandra) nakshatra and rashi, using the Ashtakoot (8 kootas) method. More gunas indicate better harmony.

How are the 36 gunas made up? (the 8 kootas)

The 8 kootas each look at a different aspect and their maximum points add up to 36: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Each koota reflects a part of the relationship, such as temperament, attraction, health or family.

What are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha?

Nadi dosha occurs when both people share the same Nadi (0 gunas in the Nadi koota), and it is considered important for health and progeny. Bhakoot dosha occurs for certain sign positions (0 gunas in Bhakoot). Both can be cancelled in some cases, so they should be read with the full chart, not alone.

How many gunas are needed for marriage?

As a rough guide: below 18 is weak, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 good, and 33 to 36 an excellent match. But gunas are only a starting point; for the real picture you need both full charts, dashas and doshas.

Kundli Milan FAQ

Above 18 gunas is generally acceptable, 25 to 32 is good, and 33 to 36 is an excellent match. Below 18 is considered weak compatibility.

No. Gunas are only a starting score. Even with low gunas, if both charts and doshas are fine the match can work. So a decision should not rest on gunas alone, the full charts should be seen.

Nadi dosha occurs when both share the same Nadi, giving 0 gunas in the Nadi koota. It is considered important for health and progeny, but in some cases it is cancelled, and then it is not held against the match.

Beyond guna milan, the Mangal dosha of both charts is also compared. If one is manglik and the other is not, it is reviewed separately, because it is not part of the 36 gunas.

No. Guna milan is a good start, but for the real picture you need both full charts, dashas and planetary placements. Niyati's AI astrologer can do this deeper analysis.

Guna milan is based on the Moon's nakshatra and rashi, which come out correctly only from the birth time. A wrong time can change the nakshatra, and the result with it.
