How does kundli matching by name work?
In Vedic astrology, the first syllable of a name is tied to a nakshatra pada. Each of the 27 nakshatras has 4 padas, and each pada is assigned certain syllables. The first syllable gives the nakshatra and from it the Moon rashi, and the 36 Ashtakoot gunas are then matched on both people's nakshatra and rashi.
Is matching by name accurate?
It is an estimate. Traditionally a child is named on the syllable of their birth nakshatra (the Namkaran ceremony), so name and nakshatra usually agree. But many names today are not chosen by this rule, so the name-derived nakshatra can differ from the real one. That is why matching by name is treated as indicative, and a confirmed match comes only from birth details.
What does the name match include?
All eight kootas, Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, are based on nakshatra and rashi, so they can be derived from the name. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are covered too. But Manglik (Mangal dosha) cannot be found from a name, because it needs Mars's actual position, which means birth details.
